Five 4x4 trails on Glenmore Farm, a picturesque and peaceful Karoo farm in the Groot Rivier Valley situated 35 km from Willowmore, Eastern Cape, the gateway to the Baviaanskloof, offer you ample time to experience the rugged beauty of the Karoo firsthand.
As a bonus overnight visitors to the bush camp will have the privilege to "wake up to the call of the fish eagle".
GLENMORE 4x4 TRAILS Rating 2-3
Nearest town: Willowmore. (35km north-east on good dirt roads)
Best time of year: Year round
Maximum vehicles allowed: 15
Route distance: Five trails totalling 40km (7-10 hours)
Grading: Easy to moderate, with some undemanding farm roads for non-low-range vehicles
Route description: Glenmore is a delightful retreat with a choice of five different and comparatively easy farm trails that include rocky terrain, stream crossings and the possibility of some serious mud on the River Trail.
We managed to bog a Toyota Prado for a couple of hours, mainly through a novice's mistake, and had to hitch a ride with a tractor. The incident did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm for a drive rich in scenic delights with the bonus of 79 bird species identified on the property.
It is ideal for a quiet weekend away from it all in the Little Karoo, knowing that warm country hospitality awaits you.
Don't miss: A visit to Baviaanskloof and Timbila Bhejani Game Reserve and 4x4 Route.
Rates: R100 per vehicle if sleeping over or R150 per vehicle for day visits. R200 per person in self-catering cottage. R120 per person camping. Children under-12 half-price. R150 per person in the wendy houses.
Summary: An unexpected gem in the Little Karoo where we chose to greet the New Millennium, enjoying tranquil farm life in a picturesque setting.
